Our School

For over 50 years Queechy High School has had a reputation for delivering excellent educational outcomes for all students. Our high quality teaching and learning programs enable us to be a leading secondary school in Tasmania.
More than 700 students choose to attend Queechy, arriving from our six local primary schools and joining others from interstate and international origins. The rich diversity of our students is a feature of our school, providing opportunities to develop broad understandings and experiences that will best prepare them for successful futures.
Our school is staffed by a highly committed and talented team of teachers and support personnel. As far as possible we make decisions and develop structures that allow us to foster and maintain strong, productive relationships providing quality pastoral care and supporting our students as they move from being dependent to interdependent learners and citizens.

The Queechy curriculum develops essential skills, builds deep understandings and, importantly, promotes key personal and interpersonal attributes. Students are challenged by their work and we encourage them to take full advantage of the many opportunities for growth, and consolidation, offered. We believe a positive attitude, determination and perseverance are the foundations for future success.

We look forward to working with students and their families. We know that strong, positive relationships between home and school will result in the very best educational outcomes for each student. We actively encourage parent and community involvement and provide a variety of ways for this to occur.
The information provided in this site is offered to assist parents and students making decisions about future school options and to provide another means of communication during their time at Queechy. If, at any time, you have any questions, concerns or issues you would like to discuss further please do not hesitate to contact me.

School History

Queechy High School is situated in the suburb of Norwood, one of Launceston’s pleasant south-eastern residential areas. The school was established on its present site on February 10th, 1958 as an offshoot of the Launceston Technical High School. Mr Stan Harvey, the Principal, about a dozen teachers and 196 boys occupied the present C Block building. In 1959 several other blocks had been completed and 220 new Grade 7 boys were enrolled in the school. In 1960 the name changed to Queechy High School and girls were admitted. Initially there was mild hostility that girls were allowed to encroach on a male environment and separate playgrounds and entrances for boys and girls existed. The school became a comprehensive high school in 1960 and quickly established a reputation for educational excellence

The campus is an open, sprawling area with a number of classroom blocks surrounding a verdant, tree-filled square. The quiet formality of Queechy Square provides an excellent meeting place for students and staff. The school buildings have been well cared for and maintained over the years, and extensive re-development which was completed in 2002, has enhanced the school’s ability to cater for the diverse and changing educational demands of its community.

During the past 10 years numerous aspects of the school have changed and evolved. The redevelopment changed the appearance and configurations within the school and visitors entering the school are met with students’ bright, eye catching art work on the gym walls. The MDT, Creative Art and Foods area have been modernised and the school has a large modern library to cater for the students’ research needs.
With a student population at about 800 students, Queechy is a hive of activity and one of the largest and most diverse high schools in the state. This has advantaged Queechy students, as their social education includes experiences and interactions with a full cross section of society as well as students from overseas, including some from our Sister School in Thailand.
The educational offerings have also evolved to offer students a range of experiences in which to participate. The scope of courses within the school has expanded to accommodate the needs of students. In addition, involvement within the community has enabled Queechy to offer a broad base from which students can learn and embark on successful career paths into vocations about which they are passionate.
In the past 50 years Queechy has provided a setting which has catered for the needs, interests and consequent development of its diverse student population. Queechy continues to maintain its core values and ensures all students participate in the tremendous opportunities on offer, maintaining its history of excellence.
