Around the Q - Rob Fleming - Principal
Thank you to all the parents who attended our Parent Teacher session this week. We had over 300 individual sessions booked in with a similar number also booked, ready to go in Week 1 of Term 3. If you have yet to book please be aware the booking system will close at 3:00pm on Monday 21st July.
It was pleasing to have conversations with parents on the night who passed on their feedback about the positive experiences that their child/children are having at Queechy. In particular, many parents spoke about the high level of connection between our staff and their child. These strong relationships are a hallmark of our work at Queechy and have been a particular focus of our professional learning with staff this year.
We strongly encourage parents to also have a close relationship with our teaching team and school leaders. If you have any concerns at all about how your child is progressing or wish to reach out to staff for a conversation, then please feel free to do this at any time of the year.
We held our NAIDOC Week Assembly this week with guest speakers from our local aboriginal community. This is a significant opportunity for us to celebrate the diversity that makes Queechy such a great school to attend. We have a strong program within our school that encourages connection with community for our aboriginal students. If your child doesn’t currently take advantage of these opportunities then please reach out to Marie Stannus or Legana Hughes, our
Aboriginal Education Workers, so we can encourage them to be involved in upcoming cultural events.
I encourage all our staff and students to make the most of the upcoming holidays. Relax, refresh and re-charge ready to hit the ground running in Term 3.
Students in HaSS don’t just cover History. HaSS also includes Geography, Civics and Citizenship and Business and Economics. Students will be exposed to many sub-topics, including democracy and our political system, taxation, laws, tourism, water as a resource, sustainability, human wellbeing (and how it is measured) and so many other interesting things.
In HaSS this term, Grade 7's have covered Civics and Citizenship, as well as a Geography unit on Place and Liveability.
Grade 8's have investigated the rise of Urbanisation around the world and completed a unit on Business and Economics.
In Grade 9, students have continued to research Australian History, around the time of the European settlement onwards.
Grade 10's have learned about key turning points of WWII and Australia’s involvement, specifically looking at
North Africa, the bombing of Darwin, Kokoda and experiences of Prisoners of War.
We are excited to trial an online curriculum platform to supplement our teaching and learning programs in Science during Term 3. During the trial we will be measuring student’s opinions regarding engagement and access to understand the impact that the process is having for our learners.
We believe that this combination of explicit teaching, online interactions and practical experiments will be a positive combination for our learners. The online platform will also allow students to access their learning away from school, if they are absent through illness or for other reasons.
We have been able to further refine our units against the Australian Curriculum through our Professional Learning Teams (PLTs) this term. This has enabled us to customise learning for students and create clear real-world links to the learning we offer for students. Through this analyse, practice, assess and review cycle we are ensuring that learning is targeted and meeting the needs of our students. Our data collection through each unit is providing further insight into what is being learned and understood.
We are committed to improving our practice and will be doing further work with our feeder Primary Schools to ensure that there is a curriculum guarantee for our students coming into Queechy High.
Our Free Wellbeing Brunch on the 16th of June was a big success!
This special event wouldn't have been possible without the incredible generosity of St Leonards Milk Bar & Family Bakery. Their continued support means so much to our school community, and we're truly grateful to have such wonderful local partners backing QHS.
Students and staff joined together and enjoyed delicious treats and took a moment to relax and recharge.

This term in English, all year groups have been undertaking a novel study. Each year group has been focusing on improving their reading comprehension, close text analysis and paragraph writing skills. The learning acquired through these novel studies provides students with a range of skills that can be used across all areas of the curriculum.
Our WINN (What I Need Next) reading program for Grade 7 and 8 has been in full swing. Our Grade 7 students have focused on developing their reading comprehension skills through a range of different texts and have been completing a Picture Book Portfolio using a text of their choosing. Grade 8 students have been involved in Literature Circles, where they have read a range of First Nations picture books and developed their collaboration skills through rich text discussions.
So far this year, both Grade 9 and 10 students have had the opportunity to view English performances from Saroo Brierley, author of A Long Way Home and the inspiration for the film Lion. This week Grade 9 students have also enjoyed a performance from Bell Shakespeare called Such Sweet Sorrow based on the Romeo and Juliet story.
In Term 3, we are very excited for our annual Children’s Book Week Events from the 18th to the 22nd of August. There will be a range of exciting competitions for students throughout the entire week including our annual Book Character Dress-Up Day on Friday the 22nd of August. We encourage all students to dress as their favourite book character and join in the fun throughout the day including the Reader’s Relay.
Term 2 has been an incredibly busy but rewarding term for our students in the HPE and sports space, with there being many extracurricular opportunities to complement our regular core classes.
We began the term with our second annual House Challenge Day, which incorporates the running of the Cross Country. This was an extremely enjoyable day for staff and students, with there being many laughs shared in the novelty events as well as some healthy competition around the Cross Country track. At the conclusion of the day Allen came away as our 2025
House Champions for this event.
In Week 4 of term, we participated in the annual Bulldogs Cup against Kings Meadows High School at the
South Launceston Football ground, which was again a huge success. After the completion of the Senior Firsts game, we had managed to win the Cup back for 2025 with an overall result of 4 games to 2. We would like to thank the
South Launceston Football Club for their hospitality on the day, and to the many teachers between both schools that gave up their time for this event to take place.
In Week 5, we took a strong team of 45 students to the Inter-High Cross Country event at Kings Meadows High School to compete against every other high school in the Northern region of the state. There were some fantastic results throughout the day, which lead to us winning a number of grade-based pennants and the senior shield before being announced as back-to-back Champions for the Division 1 section of the carnival. This is an outstanding result for our school and is great reward for the hours of work that our students put in.
Throughout the term, students have also been participating in the NHSSA Winter Sports rosters on a Wednesday and Thursday afternoon in Boys Football, Girls Football, Netball and Soccer. We have had some fantastic examples of great skill and sportsmanship from all teams, with students looking forward to continuing this into Term 3.
Salon on Q students have had a blast stepping back into the 1950's. Our school production "All Shook Up" has given the opportunity for our students to research, practice and refine some absolutely awesome hairstyles.
It has been exciting for the students to practice their chosen styles on the cast members in our salon. We look forward to seeing the amazing school production along with Salon on Q hairstyles on stage!
11/12 Sport, Recreation and Fitness
On Friday the 20th of June, our Grade 11/12 Sport, Recreation and Fitness Activities class took part in an exciting excursion to Paringa Archery Club as part of our Target Games unit. Students were introduced to the fundamentals of archery, including safety procedures, equipment handling, and target shooting techniques.
A special thank you goes to Pete from Paringa, who delivered a fantastic session. His expert guidance helped everyone feel confident, safe, and engaged throughout the experience. Whether it was hitting the target or just having a go, students had a great time learning a new skill in a supportive and fun environment.

Our Grade 11/12 Certificate I in Workplace Skills students recently had the fantastic opportunity to visit TasTAFE and take part in an Espresso Essentials course. Students learned the basics of coffee making, from grinding beans to steaming milk and creating that perfect espresso shot — all while building valuable workplace skills in a real-world environment.
A huge thank you to David, our trainer, for sharing his expertise and making the experience both educational and enjoyable.
Well done to all the students for giving it a go — we’re so proud of the skills you’re building for your future!

For 2025, Queechy High School have appointed
Katrina Davenport and Peter Jacobson as our Safeguarding Leads. Safeguarding Leads are appointed in every DECYP school and CFLC in Tasmania to help ensure children and young people are known, safe, well and learning.
As Safeguarding Leads, Katrina and Peter will enhance our efforts in promoting and nurturing a culture of safeguarding at our school. This will enable us to better support the wellbeing of all our students and reinforce the understanding that keeping children and young people safe is everyone's responsibility. By improving our safeguarding culture, we can create a safer and more supportive environment for all.
Please look to continue supporting Katrina and Peter in their role.

On Friday night, the 20th of June, our Grade 10 cohort enjoyed a School Lock-In.
They spent the night in the school gym and the Grade 11/12 block. Ordering in Uber eats, watching the AFL on the big screen, playing video games in the classrooms, making use of the PE equipment and playing spotlight on school grounds proved to be a big hit!
The biggest highlight however was seeing students mingle in together and form new friendships. A huge thank you goes out to the SLB for organising this event, particularly our co-president, Delilah for taking the lead. Well done!
This year, our Grade 9/10 Child Studies classes have been learning about Pregnancy and Parenthood. Students have explored a range of topics including the roles of parents and caregivers, conception, contraception, infertility, and how to care for a mum-to-be including the effects of substances on unborn babies.
We were fortunate to welcome a very special guest speaker - Phoebe and her adorable son Eddie. Phoebe generously shared her personal journey of becoming a mother at a young age, speaking openly about the challenges, sacrifices, and joys she has faced. Her honesty and warmth gave students a firsthand perspective into the realities of teen parenting, sparking some excellent questions and reflections from the class. A huge thank you to Phoebe and Eddie for sharing their story and helping make our learning so meaningful.
As part of the unit, students also looked into the kinds of foods pregnant people are advised to avoid for health and safety reasons. To make this engaging, they were presented with a platter featuring some of the "off-limits" foods — including soft cheeses, cold deli meats and sushi. This interactive activity helped students better understand the 'why' behind the guidelines.
We're incredibly proud of how respectfully and thoughtfully students approached these sensitive topics. This unit has given them not just health knowledge but real insight into the lives of parents and caregivers.
