Dear Families
All students have now received their interim reports for term 1. These reports are a way to take a quick snapshot of student engagement, organisation and attitude to learning. For some students, reports are a great way to celebrate a positive start to the year. For other students they can provide confirmation that there are opportunities for improvement in some or most learning areas.
For all students however, the most important opportunities from their school reports are the conversations they can have with adults at home about how school is for them, what is working well and what are areas for further growth.
I strongly encourage all parents and carers to have a positive conversation with your child about their learning and how they are progressing this year at Queechy.
Questions like:
- What’s your favourite subject?
- What is working well for you at school this year?
- What are some of your challenges?
- How can we help you to be the best learner you can be?
Our young people are very aware of when learning is working well for them, and when it’s not. As carers it is important to give your children the opportunity to let you know what school is like for them, at the moment, and seek help or support if it is required.
Parent - Teacher
Our Parent - Teacher conversations are a great way to bring some of these conversations back to your child’s teacher. This allows us to work in partnership with home to support student learning to an even higher level. We always suggest bringing your child along to be a part of the conversation if possible.
Our Parent - Teacher session will be in the second week of Term 2, Tuesday 27th April from 3:30-6:45. We are using our online booking system as usual but would like to remind parents that if a teacher you want is unavailable or fully booked please make contact with the school office on 6341 4455 so we can ensure you are able to have a conversation with the teacher concerned. This may be by email, phone, or face to face.
School Association
I warmly welcome any parents to think about joining the
School Association. We meet twice per term and discuss issues important to the running and planning of our school. I highly value the opinions and ideas that we explore at school association meetings.
There is currently a vacant office bearer position, please feel free to contact myself or Committee Chair, Sonia Peck on
0419 309 810.
Warm Regards
Rob Fleming
As Easter falls within the term break this year, students last day of Term 1 will be Wednesday, 31st March. Term 2 will commence Wednesday 21st April.
Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Tuesday, 27th April from 3.30pm to 6.45pm. Staff will be available on the night to talk with Parents/Guardians, providing a great opportunity to follow up any concerns or simply meet your child's teacher.
This year again we are using an online booking system which we hope will give parents more control over the time and sequence of their appointments. Parents are able to log on to the parent teacher database via the following link.
https://queechyhs.schoolzineplus.com/view-session/3
If you are having trouble logging on, please contact the school on 6341 4455 and administration will help you book an appointment. We would also like to remind parents that if you're wishing to meet with a teacher and their session's are fully booked, please contact the office to ensure you are able to have a conversation with that teacher. This may be via email, phone or face to face.
Thank you to our community for so many generous donations, also to Mr Daniel Ritchie and the Student Leadership Board for their amazing funraising efforts raising over $3000 and who walked over a total of 640km! Special mentions to
Akalyla and Danika for walking 100 laps (40km) and Liam who walked 150 laps (60km).
Relay For Life Launceston raised close to $160,000. All money raised stays in Tasmania - it helps with things like research, accommodation and transport for those battling cancer, wigs, counselling and many different support services.
If you would like to make a donation, you can do so here: https://secure.fundraising.cancer.org.au/site/TR/RelayforLife/CCTAS?team_id=68730&pg=team&fr_id=6447&fbclid=IwAR0JrBIC1hvYL6PYgDOiXoraZ2DlfpEZu0tNk01z_8WZAJ7H8DGourl_0UQ or via the link on our Queechy Facebook page.
This term for Grade 10 Science, we have been learning about physics, with the focus on reading position graphs.
Grade 10’s have had the opportunity to use the PASCO cars to learn about the terms speed, acceleration and friction of moving objects. Students have been working hard to finish their experimental report where they had the task of designing and implementing how the slope of an incline affects the speed of an object moving down it.
Students in Grade 9 English have started the year with a comprehensive unit of work unpacking the crime fiction genre.
They have had the opportunity to review the key elements of narrative writing and have explored a range of texts to develop their understanding of what makes quality crime fiction. Students enjoyed reading Roald Dahl’s short story Lamb to the Slaughter and viewing the first episode of Sherlock, completing a range of tasks around these texts.
In the coming weeks, they will conclude their work in this unit by writing their own crime fiction stories.
This term, Grade 9 have looked at Financial and Statistical maths skills. Students have been provided with a checklist of ‘I can’ statements around mathematical skills and are constructing a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate these skills.
Below are students from 9F demonstrating that they ‘can' construct a back-to-back stem and leaf plot and compare the two data sets using terms including “skewed”, “symmetrical” and “bimodal”.
In HASS, 10A and 10F have been looking at the
'Treaty of Versailles'.
This is the peace treaty developed by France, UK and USA at the end of WW1 which was designed to hold Germany accountable for the damage and loss that occurred during the War. This Treaty is important to look at and understand because it helps us to understand how WW2 was set into motion. Here are some pictures of 10F hard at work at tasks relating to this topic.
Student Absence SMSThe main contact of the student will receive an SMS message if they are an unexplained absence during Tutor Group. If the student arrives after 9:00am and signs in you will still receive the message as they were absent from Tutor Group. Please reply to the message with the child’s name, date, and details of your child’s absence. Parents are required to explain every absence. Parents have the option of messaging the school to advise of explained absences. Can parents please double check that our school SMS number has not been blocked in your phone settings. To avoid receiving an SMS please phone the school on Absent Student Message Bank 6341 4444. |
Road Safety: A reminder to students crossing roads on their way to and from school, to be alert and aware of the dangers when in and around traffic. |
PARKING IN SCHOOL GROUNDSWhen parking in the school grounds, please use the visitor carpark, the parking bays near the visitor carpark or the area next to the tennis courts. Please do not park in the bus parking areas as this space is reserved for buses only and this creates further congestion. Also, a reminder that the disabled park spots are only to be used by permit holders and that permits must be displayed. Due to safety concerns please avoid using the staff car park when dropping off or picking up students. Main Staff Carpark
The main Staff Carpark adjacent the School Office will be closed off every day at 2:30p.m. to reduce congestion and ensure the safety of our students.

Parents/carers collecting student/s during class time – Please allow extra timeThere are occasions when a parent/carer needs to collect their child from class during the course of the day, i.e. appointments, leaving early etc. When this happens, the student has to be called or collected from the classroom. This causes disruption to your child, the teacher, the class and regularly to the whole school if the student has to be paged. If your child has to be taken out of class time, where possible, we will avoid using the PA system and instead someone will collect your child from the classroom and this may take some time depending on where your child’s class is. We value the learning of our students and therefore ask that where possible, you collect your child during the break times (times shown below) and in particular if you wish to take your child early in the afternoon, the best time is over the lunch break (1:10pm – 1:50pm) before the start of Block 4, i.e. 1:50pm.
