What a busy few weeks we have had here at Queechy. We have had our students experiencing:
- World’s Greatest Shave
- Growth Industry Excursion
- Beauty Therapy Excursion
- Two performances from outside organisations
- Mountain Biking excursion
- Grade 7 Social
- Holocaust presentation
- History Competitions
Our staff work tirelessly to ensure the very best opportunities for our students throughout the year as being a student at Queechy isn’t just about the learning that takes place in our classrooms every day. We aim to provide the most varied and engaging opportunities we can for all our students.
Our Mission at Queechy is:
To inspire and prepare all students for a positive future
We do this through a variety of ways, not the least being the many and varied experiences we offer our students.
Queechy High School is invested in making positive memories that impact on our young people in a positive, life-long way.
I frequently talk to our students about three key considerations that add to their positive experiences at school:
- Make the most of every opportunity we provide you,
- Don’t be a passenger in your own learning, take control and have a “red-hot” go and
- Work to build the best legacy you can during your time here
I see evidence every day of young people who do these three things brilliantly and then reap the rewards as a result.
On Tuesday 8th June, Queechy High School students were brave and shaved (and coloured), to fundraise for the Leukemia Foundation. The World's Greatest Shave event was organised and ran by the Student Leadership Board to raise much needed funds for the Leukemia Foundation, students watched on in the gym enjoyed a BBQ lunch.
Over $750 was raised by the QHS community. Thank you for all our brave students who shaved their hair to support such a great cause and to those who donated.

Queechy High School uniforms can be purchased online at Midford. Visit: www.midford.com.au , select Queechy and register an account. Orders can either be delivered, collected in school or delivered to the school and passed onto students directly.
On Tuesday 1st June, Queechy High School students represented the school at the Inter High Cross Country. It was a great effort by all, especially Oliver who placed 1st in the Grade 9 Boys, Max who placed 3rd in the Grade 10 Boys and the Grade 10 Boys team who placed 1st to bring home a penant.
Grade 7 Boys placed 2nd, Grade 8 Girls placed 3rd , Grade 9 Girls placed 3rd and Grade 9 Boys placed 2nd. QHS placed 4th overall!
In Grade 7 Maths, students have been exploring the applications of fractions to real world scenarios. This has involved students problem solving situations such as “5 pizzas are shared between 3 people, what fraction of pizza will each person get?”. These scenarios have provided an excellent opportunity for students to work together, discussing maths and more importantly, pizza!
Have you ever written a paragraph convincing your teacher that all weekends should be 3 days long? Or how about made a venn diagram to compare and contrast white and milk chocolate? After spending the first part of the term working on persuasive language skills, our Grade 7 students have argued all this and more.
Now in week 8, we are well under way with our Novel Study unit and Grade 7 classes are enjoying crossing the Nile into Ethiopia with A Long Walk to Water’s Salva, navigating the school yard with Captain Mack’s Danny and battling the wilderness alongside Brian in Hatchet. Throughout Term 2 we have been developing key skills including imbedding quotes and using comparative language. In the coming weeks Grade 7 students will be writing essays discussing the themes and characters of their respective class novels. Keep up the great work everyone!
For the past two weeks, Grade 9 has been learning about how the eye functions to see light. Students were successful in dissecting a bull's eye and taking a closer look at the different structures in the eye. Students have had a focus on expanding their vocabulary regarding how light refracts depending on the different transparent, translucent or opaque objects. Students were also successful in providing an experimental design that investigates how light bends.
As part of the Grade 8 Street Art program we visited Royal Park to view the street art along the wall of the Tamar River levee bank.
We took some photos and did some sketching of the surrounds of the skate park.
Each student was supplied with a paint pen and we added some ‘tagging’ to the existing graffiti zone along the levee wall. In previous lessons, students came up with a design for their tag and most of them included their own initials or their first name, written in a graffiti style.

MND stands for Motor Neurone Disease. Motor neurone disease affects the nerves (motor neurones) that communicate between the brain and the muscles that enable us to move, speak, swallow and breathe. In people with MND, the motor neurones gradually degenerate and die, causing the muscles to weaken and waste. Every day, two Australians are diagnosed with MND and two die from the disease. There are currently over 2,100 Australians living with MND.
At Queechy High School this year, we are holding an MND Beanie Day at school, to promote awareness of the disease and raise funds in the effort to fight it. This will be on Friday the 25th June. There will be a lunchtime BBQ, selling sausages, kebabs, and cans for $2 each and a staff vs student football match. There is also a gold coin donation for wearing a beanie on the day (this can be any beanie, not just the MND variety).
Grade 7 SRC members spent Monday morning (24th May) baking and icing cupcakes.
As you can see the cupcakes were iced in House colours. They were sold the next day at our Cross Country Carnival for $2 each. A total profit of $240 was made and is being donated to the Launceston City Mission. A BIG thank you to Mrs Frankcombe and her Grade 9/10 catering class for their support in making the cupcakes and donating the ingredients.
Thank you also to all the students and teachers who bought a cupcake and helped us to raise so much for money for a great local charity. The picture below shows the SRC presenting our money to Roberto, a representative from the Launceston City Mission.
Student Absence SMSThe main contact of the student will receive an SMS message if they are an unexplained absence during Tutor Group. If the student arrives after 9:00am and signs in you will still receive the message as they were absent from Tutor Group. Please reply to the message with the child’s name, date, and details of your child’s absence. Parents are required to explain every absence. Parents have the option of messaging the school to advise of explained absences. Can parents please double check that our school SMS number has not been blocked in your phone settings. To avoid receiving an SMS please phone the school on Absent Student Message Bank 6341 4444. |
Road Safety: A reminder to students crossing roads on their way to and from school, to be alert and aware of the dangers when in and around traffic. |
PARKING IN SCHOOL GROUNDSWhen parking in the school grounds, please use the visitor carpark, the parking bays near the visitor carpark or the area next to the tennis courts. Please do not park in the bus parking areas as this space is reserved for buses only and this creates further congestion. Also, a reminder that the disabled park spots are only to be used by permit holders and that permits must be displayed. Due to safety concerns please avoid using the staff car park when dropping off or picking up students. Main Staff Carpark
The main Staff Carpark adjacent the School Office will be closed off every day at 2:30p.m. to reduce congestion and ensure the safety of our students.

Parents/carers collecting student/s during class time – Please allow extra timeThere are occasions when a parent/carer needs to collect their child from class during the course of the day, i.e. appointments, leaving early etc. When this happens, the student has to be called or collected from the classroom. This causes disruption to your child, the teacher, the class and regularly to the whole school if the student has to be paged. If your child has to be taken out of class time, where possible, we will avoid using the PA system and instead someone will collect your child from the classroom and this may take some time depending on where your child’s class is. We value the learning of our students and therefore ask that where possible, you collect your child during the break times (times shown below) and in particular if you wish to take your child early in the afternoon, the best time is over the lunch break (1:10pm – 1:50pm) before the start of Block 4, i.e. 1:50pm.
