Celebration Morning Teas
We are currently celebrating significant student achievements from the first half of the year. Many of our students have earned recognition for their excellent work ethic and academic performance. Traditionally we have invited parents along for an opportunity to join us in congratulating their children for their positive approach to schooling. Unfortunately, this year we are unable to host parents on site due to COVID restrictions and volume density requirements.
Hopefully we will be in a position next year to once again invite parents back to these important celebrations.
COVID Requirements at Queechy
With the recent events in Launceston quarantine highlighting the unpredictable nature of the current pandemic, it is timely to consider what this means for us at Queechy.
The current risk of an outbreak in Tasmania is very real.
As a school we are asking students and families to abide by the changes we put in place in 2020 to mitigate any likelihood of community transmission. At Queechy this means:
- Keep your children home if they are unwell, particularly if they exhibit respiratory like symptoms
- Have yourselves or your children tested if you or they have any respiratory like symptoms
- Avoid sending your children back to school if they are unwell, even if they are COVID free
- When visiting our site check in at the main office, maintaining physical distancing with a maximum of 6 people in our main foyer at a time
- If on-site for events like parent teacher, cross-country or athletics please sign in using the “Check-In Tas” App. These QR codes are located around our school during parent events
- Sanitise when entering our site
- Students are to use sanitiser located in all our classrooms at the beginning of each lesson
- Follow any stay at home or isolation orders that may affect you or members of your family
As a school we are working on a detailed plan about what happens if we have any community transmission of COVID-19 in Tasmania again.
During these still uncertain times I ask all of our community to not be complacent about the risks caused by COVID-19, remember the strategies we need to use to keep each other safe and please follow all our school-based management measures if you are on our site for any reason.
Thank you for your cooperation.

In this class, students focus on a particular sport for 4 to 5 lessons to improve their understanding of the skills and rules of the particular game. Students are progressing their leadership skills by taking on responsibilities such as umpiring, timing, scoring and captaincy. The captain is chosen by their peers for each sport and their role is to complete a warm up for their team, lead skill drills and structure the team and their positions. So far we have focussed on AFL, Soccer, Indoor Hockey, Baseball, Touch Football, and Lacrosse. We will be looking at Gaelic Football and Athletics for the remainder of Term 3.
On Friday 30th July, it was Queechy High School's day to celebrate National Tree Day. Some of our Grade 7 Students planted a range of native trees and shrubs, including some that are rare or threatened. Over 60 native seedlings were planted on the school grounds. The plants will support the slope they’re on as well as providing habitat and food for native animals.
Queechy has been participating in the Northern High Schools Sporting Association (NHSSA) netball rosters for Wednesday Afternoon Activities (WAA – 9/10), Thursday Afternoon Activities (TAA 7/8) and Saturday Morning Netball.
In the WAA competition we have three teams: 1sts, 2nds and 4ths. Currently the 1sts are in second place on the ladder, the 2nds are fourth and the 4ths are sitting fourth. All girls participate against other northern high schools. Some of our students who umpire NTNA games are umpiring other Division 1 games for other schools. Our own games have seen our students step up and umpire whilst others score.
In the TAA we have four teams: 1sts, 2nds and 3rds A and 3rds B. 1sts are currently third on the ladder, 2nds are eighth, 3rds A are second and 3rds B are fifth. Students umpire and score their own games.
Saturday Morning Netball has seen two senior teams entered, 1sts A and 1st B. Currently 1st B is second on the ladder, whilst 1st A are fifth. Girls from each team umpire the other as they play at different timeslots at Hoblers Bridge Netball Centre.
Participation in all three rosters has been great as has the attitude towards other schools and the games. Students have stepped up to umpire and their skills have improved throughout the season.
Good luck for the remainder of the season!
Throughout Term 2 and 3, students have been representing Queechy High School at Thursday afternoon soccer competing against other schools.
We started our season at the start of term 2 where we held 2 training sessions to see the skills of each player. Each player showed their own unique skills, which allowed for Mr McCaffrey and Mr Van Est to choose two evenly matched sides. This was proven to be the case as the two Queechy teams faced each other in a nail bitting 3-3 draw in the rain in round 3. Both teams fought hard and played well. Since then, the teams have faced each other 2 other times with the Queechy B boys gaining the upper hand of Queechy A, but all games have been close. Both teams have come a long way since the start of the season winning multiple games and improving their soccer skills. We are all looking forward to the remainder of the season and see if both teams can continue to improve their skills and ability to play good, team soccer.
Our Student Leadership Board recently held a can drive in support of the Launceston Benevolent Society, who provide emergency support and assistance for people in need in the form of hampers, food vouchers, clothing, nappies, budgeting and financial advice. Our students collected over 6 boxes worth of cans in support for this drive, which included foods such as cereal, canned soups and pastas. Thank you to all who donated to the can drive and to the Student Leadership Board for coordinating!
Now is not the time to become complacent with our COVID-19 safe behaviours. It is important that all staff, students and visitors to QHS are using the provided sanistiser whenever they enter or exit a room.
We are committed to keeping on top of COVID-19, so please follow these behaviours to keep our staff and learners safe:
- Wash your hands regularly and use the hand sanitizer provided whenever entering or exiting a classroom
- Keep your distance - please maintain physical distancing
- Stay home if you're unwell and get tested if you have symptoms
- Follow Public Health advice and all current restrictions
We really apreciate all the support of our families at QHS to keep our school safe. If you have any concerns, please contact the school office on 6341 4455.
Student Absence SMSThe main contact of the student will receive an SMS message if they are an unexplained absence during Tutor Group. If the student arrives after 9:00am and signs in you will still receive the message as they were absent from Tutor Group. Please reply to the message with the child’s name, date, and details of your child’s absence. Parents are required to explain every absence. Parents have the option of messaging the school to advise of explained absences. Can parents please double check that our school SMS number has not been blocked in your phone settings. Road Safety: A reminder to students crossing roads on their way to and from school, to be alert and aware of the dangers when in and around traffic. |
PARKING IN SCHOOL GROUNDSWhen parking in the school grounds, please use the visitor carpark, the parking bays near the visitor carpark or the area next to the tennis courts. Please do not park in the bus parking areas as this space is reserved for buses only and this creates further congestion. Also, a reminder that the disabled park spots are only to be used by permit holders and that permits must be displayed. Due to safety concerns please avoid using the staff car park when dropping off or picking up students. Main Staff Carpark
The main Staff Carpark adjacent the School Office will be closed off every day at 2:30p.m. to reduce congestion and ensure the safety of our students.

Parents/carers collecting student/s during class time – Please allow extra timeThere are occasions when a parent/carer needs to collect their child from class during the course of the day, i.e. appointments, leaving early etc. When this happens, the student has to be called or collected from the classroom. This causes disruption to your child, the teacher, the class and regularly to the whole school if the student has to be paged. If your child has to be taken out of class time, where possible, we will avoid using the PA system and instead someone will collect your child from the classroom and this may take some time depending on where your child’s class is. We value the learning of our students and therefore ask that where possible, you collect your child during the break times (times shown below) and in particular if you wish to take your child early in the afternoon, the best time is over the lunch break (1:10pm – 1:50pm) before the start of Block 4, i.e. 1:50pm.
