The year 10’s have been studying Chemistry during term 1. 10D are currently completing a practical report as their main assessment for Term 1.
Here they are investigating how to speed up or slow down a chemical reaction.
The students then relate their finding to real world applications such as using a fridge to slow the decay of fresh produce by cooling the food and the rate of the chemical reaction which causes decay slows down.

Mathematics Grade 8
This year, Grade 8 students have started the year focussing on the number strand of the Australian Curriculum.
There has been a big focus on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing positive and negative numbers, including finding solutions to more complex worded problems.
It has been great to see students developing more improved study habits as well as working collaboratively to teach each other and find the solution to learning activities.
Students in Grade 9 English have been learning about crime fiction and using this genre as an avenue to study narrative.
Students have been working on analysing different crime fiction stories and are now taking the opportunity to engage in their own creative, crime fiction writing.
Various crime stories have been read, with a focus on identifying the crime fiction elements within each story and the deliberate language choices that authors have made.
Throughout this unit students have learnt about different types of crime fiction, engaged in ‘who dunnit’ activities, and studied a film adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlett murder mystery.
MDT has had a busy start this year, with many students becoming well engaged with new projects.
A priority has been reformatting the entire woodwork, metalwork, and stem areas into a much more student friendly area, which is now nearing completion, and following on from last year as more new equipment is currently on order.
One of the sections almost finished is a dedicated wood turning area with 4 new lathes set up allowing for much more student usage, with all year 7 applied technology participants already using this facility.
One of the main drives this year in line with the national curriculum guidelines, is for all students to be more directly involved in project design and modification.
The photos in this article show a small cross section of the types of woodwork being worked on.

Students in Year 10 History are currently learning about World War 2. Topics studied have included:
- The Treaty of Versailles
- The Great Depression
- The rise of Hitler
- The failed League of Nations
- Germany’s invasion of Poland.
Students have been developing their research and paragraph writing skills in preparation for their final assessment task - a five paragraph essay discussing the causes of WW2.
Tier 2 Program - Social Skills
Mr Butchart is running a Tier 2 programme focussing on helping students improve their social and communication skills.
Students involved in the course have been using Drama techniques to collaborate and communicate effectively with each other and be confident enough to present their work to an audience.
Here are some pictures taken from the lessons.

The year 11/12 students, led by the new AST Luke Tepper, have settled well into first term. This year we are offering Certificate II in Community Services, Working with Children, Introduction to Sociology and Psychology, and Maths General 2 and 3.
We have been learning about working in community services and care roles; interacting with guest speakers; enjoying different hands-on workshops; and celebrating Harmony Day and Easter.
We are working towards being out in the community on work placement and we are engaging with the School of Nursing at the University of Tasmania.
We wish to thank Lisa Mitchell for starting the year as the AST.

School Association Update
Last week we held our Annual General Meeting. I would like to formally thank all members of the School Association for their ongoing support of Queechy High School. Our parent representatives help give me an invaluable insight into our school and areas we can improve. Many of the initiatives and developments we put in place at Queechy go to the School Association for discussion and feedback before being enacted.
Our school association has 11 possible positions. Currently we have only 8 filled so we are encouraging at least three parents to make contact who would like to find out more and if possible, nominate themselves for a position for the next two years.
If you are interested then please contact the office and either myself, Sonia Peck, our Chair, will be in touch for a conversation.
Our executive positions were determined at the AGM, and I thank the following people for putting themselves forward to help support the SA for the next 12 months.
Chair position: Sonia Peck
Secretary: Rachel Kerrison
Vice Chair: Mandy Brown
Treasurer: Kirsty Crawford
NAPLAN Completed
Thank you to all students and staff who participated in our annual NAPLAN assessments which finished last week. As mentioned previously the information we receive from this process helps guide our teaching and learning program at Queechy and helps us measure the success of our current approaches.
Athletics Carnival
Monday and Tuesday saw the completion of our 1500m events which brings the Athletics Carnival to a close. Well done to all students who participated with several very strong results across the school.
A big congratulations to students in McLeod who were announced as the overall champion house for 2023!!
The Slow Fashion Sewing Series: for young beginners - Holiday Intensive
Learning how to sew your own slow fashion clothes with Lisa Haas
Dates: Tues 11th April- Fri 14th 2:00-5:00pm
At The ReDress Hub, we're here to help you on your journey to be more 'circular' with your clothing choices, avoid or reduce the consumption of fast-fashion, and clothing and textile waste.
This series of 4 x 3 hour workshops, has been specially designed for young beginners during the school holidays as a one week intensive course. This series of workshops has been created to assist you on your circular clothing journey, so you can start to create your own handmade 'slow-fashion' clothes and contribute to the global circular clothing movement.
The amazing Lisa Haas (a designer and school teacher) will be your workshop facilitator, guiding you over the four workshops from how to choose fabric, read, mark, and cut out a pattern right through to constructing and finishing a garment for you to proudly wear at the end of the course.
The Slow Fashion Sewing Series includes:
- Day 1: Patterns and Fabric (choosing fabrics, reading a pattern, marking and pinning, cutting out and tacking)
- Day 2 : Construction Fundamentals (stay stitching, facing, understitching)
- Day 3 : Garment Construction (side seams, sleeve insertion)
- Day 4 : Finishing (hemming and/or casing)
