Grade 10 HaSS starts at the end of World War 1, looks at the Roaring 20's, the Great Depression and then onto World War 2.
As we consider the causes of the war, we encourage students to consider links between ideologies and circumstances to previous combatants to what is happening in the world now. Also, to understand how national tensions from previous conflicts contributes to current situations.
In considering the Holocaust we watched a movie Schindler's List. Amongst the drepessing anguist of racial hatred, it was uplifting to see how one person can stand up and save so many.
We are now moving onto the 'Human Well-being' and will consider matters such as: Housing Security; Jobs; Life Safisfaction; and Work-Life Balance. It has been a good lead into such concepts for the students to have had a presentation from headspace this week.
Towards the end of the 'Human Well-being' unit, students will examine the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially how we all can contribute to a better future for all.
In grade 9 mathematics, our students have been studying statistics, exploring concepts like stem-and-leaf plots. frequency tables, histograms, and box and whisker plots. They have learnt to analyse data and make informed decisions based on their finding.
Next, we will dive into a new unit focused on geometry. Our students will explore surface area, shape bets, and volume. They will learn to calculate the total area of three-dimensional objects, create two dimensional representations of three-dimensional shapes using shape nets, and determine the amount of shape enclosed by objects through volume calculations.
We are excited to witness their growth in mathematics as they delve into these engaging topics. Please continue to support and encourage your child's mathematical development through discussions and real-world applications related to these concepts.
Grade 7 students have begun undertaking a novel study during the past weeks. One of the texts being studied has been a book titled Captain Mack by James Roy.
Through reading this book students will have the opportunity to learn about how different characteristics and traits can be effectively conveyed by an author through text. They will learn to identify key themes and support their ideas by referencing specific quotes from the text.
Students will also have the opportunity to create and perform short speeches/presentations to their class, where they will present information about some of the key themes and character traits that they identify.

Over the past two terms, students from Applied Technology have been developing skills based around safe workshop practice, metalwork and woodwork to design and create toasting forks. Some students have furthered themselves by working with leather, completing additional wood working activities or just supporting each other in this collaborative environment. Thursday afternoons are an amazing time for the members of the MDT team that engage with these students.
Their ideas, problem solving skills and eagerness to attempt the task at hand is refreshing. Moreover, their attitudes and manners are mature and impeccable. They have a laugh and enjoy themselves, yet still get the job done and are productive, while being supportive of each other. The students from both classes have worked well as a whole. The attitudes and efforts they have demonstrated is the culture that sets Queechy High in good stead for the future. The MDT team is impressed and proud of these students.

Students spoke about their forks and self-assessed their own work. Their honesty and justifications were detailed and articulate, which was a positive for the task as they have learnt and acknowledged where they could improve next time. It’s a fantastic problem to have as these two groups allow a teacher’s planning and content being explored to go to the highest echelon.

The procedure entailed students to design a toasting fork and illustrate their ideas with technical drawings. Once the students had worked out measurements and the outline of their designs, they started constructing them. Some students focused on the fork design more than the handle and vice versa. It was wonderful to see students extend themselves with detailed design, yet others made simplistic designs elegant and aesthetically pleasing. All students have developed safety, use of hand tools, and wood lathe skills in the process.

Next term, we delve into copper work with the support and experience of using other materials. The MDT department will be a hive of activity. If any members of the Queechy High community would like to contribute or impart knowledge in this space, we are always open to the option. The MDT team look forward to seeing what’s going to be produced and maybe, we will see you in this space one day.

Grade 8 musicians have been leaning about “The Blues”. A history of the genre was presented before learning the 12-bar blues chord progression. All students learnt the blues scale and how to apply it to improvising on their instruments. Students are now preparing for their end of term performances.
Grade 9-10 musicians have been taking an in-depth journey through the history of music from the earliest physical evidence of humans making music 40,000 years ago to the present. Students are writing about their favourite period and/or genre to gain a deeper understanding of where their preferred music fits into the greater music family tree. These students are also preparing for their end of term performances.

Transition
Our two transition programs are currently ramping up for students transitioning to Queechy from year 6 and for our year 10’s heading off to their year 11 destination.
Year 6 Transition
Fran Smyth is coordinating visits to primary schools currently and has developed a new Teams Page for our feeder primary schools to help support the sharing of information as we head towards the transition visits. Students will have multiple opportunities to engage with both staff and students from Queechy to help support their transition into our school in 2024. All students intending to enrol here will have opportunities to also be on-site on several occasions as well. If you have any questions about our process this year please feel free to contact the school office on 6341 4455 and we will reach out to assist. Alternatively, our Queechy Alliance primary schools can also assist with your queries.
Year 11 Transition
All our year 10 students are currently engaged in making decisions about their destination school for 2024. Our students enjoyed their time at Newstead College recently finding out more about the College, subjects and staff. Thank you to college staff for organising a very engaging experience for our students and staff.
Both Launceston and Newstead College will be hosting our students next Monday and Tuesday. This is a great opportunity for our students to make an informed decision about where they can see themselves learning for the next two years. I ask families to spend time talking to your children about what they see and hear next week to help them make a choice that will be the best for them going forward.
As usual if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us and the most appropriate staff member will be able to follow up with you.
Duty Times
A reminder to families that our duty of care commences when duty starts of a morning at 8:30am and concludes when our last duty finishes at 3:20pm. Outside of these hours parents and carers are responsible for the duty of care of your children.
Our school day begins at 8:45 am and concludes at 2:57pm.

The cooler months bring colds, the flu, COVID-19 and other illnesses.
Being prepared is the best way to protect yourself and your family.
Prepare
Children are most likely to catch and spread the flu. Make sure your child has received their annual flu vaccine. This will boost their immunity against most likely circulating flu strains. It will also help stop them getting very sick.
Plan
If your child is at higher risk of becoming very sick from the flu, COVID-19 or other respiratory illnesses, make a plan with your healthcare provider for when your child becomes sick.
Protect
Protect others by keeping your child home if they’re unwell, encouraging regular hand washing, and covering coughs and sneezes.
For more information, read the [enclosed/attached] parent and carer factsheet or visit the Department of Health website.
Thanks for doing your part to keep our school community safe, healthy and learning.
