Sporting Success
Congratulations to all staff and students involved in the NHSSA winter sports roster. We have had many teams competing across Football, Soccer and Netball during terms 2 and 3.
Last week saw an almost unprecedented level of success for our senior boys and girls’ football and senior soccer.
I had the pleasure watching these games last Wednesday at Prospect Park in challenging, windy conditions.
After a tight first half the Division 1 soccer team scored twice and ended up narrow winners against a much-improved Brooks team.
The senior girl’s football was a very strong, full-team performance with a solid result, kicking away from Prospect in the final quarter.
A large crowd turned out to support both Riverside and Queechy in the Senior boy’s football. This was a tight game with Riverside coming back to be only 7 points down heading into the last quarter. Our boys stood up and showed great determination and courage to run out the eventual winners. I was impressed with how this team has come together under the leadership of Mr Tepper. The games this year were hard-fought but fair with a significant level of respect shown to opposing teams during the competition.
As a result of winning the Northern Title our boys qualified for the Hawks Cup, a round robin competition against Burnie High, (NW) and St Virgils, (South) at the Longford Football Ground.
Tassie Hawks Cup Results:
Game 1: Queechy defeated Burnie High
Game 2: St.Virgils Defeated Queechy High
Game 3: St.Virgils Defeated Burnie High
Grand Final: St.Virgils Defeated Queechy High
Goal Scorers:
Sam 7, Harry 4, Jaxson 2, Zac 2, Hunter 1, Oscar 1, Curtis 1, Louis 1, Axell 1.
Best Players: Oscar, Sam, Lachlan, Cameron, Harry, Jaxson, Zac.
We are very proud of all our teams this year and look forward to defending the three titles in 2022.
White Card Training
Thank you to Allan Warren for organising another 15 Year 9/10 students to complete their white card training. This nationally recognised training is an important first step for students wishing to complete work-placements or apply for apprenticeships in the building, construction, or electrical industries. Well done to all who completed this rigorous two-day program!
By the time you read this over a hundred Grade 10s will have sat their English exams. Congratulations to those who opted into undertaking this experience that helps mark the transition from high school to life beyond 2021.
Section A will have been on a text studied so far this year. One of the most enduring and powerful has been John Steinbeck’s 1937 novel, Of Mice and Men. When a student was describing why he felt out of sorts he named up the death of the central character, Lennie as one of the reasons for him being so annoyed with the world that week. That’s the sign of a story that stays with you after the pages have closed.
The story of George, Lennie and their friendship gave everyone something to think about. Seen below is an image from the novel that students chose to recreate as part of their assessment for the unit.
On Thursday 9th September, 88 Grade 10 students participated in the Mathematics Exam.
The exam covered all topics taught throughout the year, ranging from financial mathematics to trigonometry .
Students not only gained the experience of participating in an exam, but also valuable skills in preparing for such a challenge.
Congratulations to the entire group of students who remained focused and positive throughout the whole experience.
We now look forward to seeing how all students have gone in the exam and providing feedback in regards to moving forwards in their mathematics.

On Friday September 3rd, two Grade 7 teams and one grade 9 team participated in the Queechy Alliance Tamar Tales at Newstead College. This involved 6-10 writers and illustrators who, over the course of an extended school day, had to draft and publish a book. Teams were provided with a set of parameters to write their story - three characters, an issue, a setting and 6 random words.
Each team ended up with a bound, published book of approximately 4,000 words including cover page, illustrations and a back cover blurb. These will soon be on display in our school library.
Our students were joined by teams from our feeder primary schools and Big Picture school. This was a fantastic opportunity to build relationships. Queechy and Newstead College provided ‘helpers’ for our younger teams and the feedback from all schools about the interactions and learning opportunities this created was overwhelmingly positive.

In our unit ‘Making A Nation’, 9A has been working on a commemoration task to show their understanding of the experiences of Indigenous Australians when Europeans arrived on our shores. The idea was to produce a piece of work that could be used as tribute to celebrate our Indigenous peoples. Students were encouraged to play to their strengths and interests when considering this task.
commemoration ‘a ceremony or celebration in which a person or event is remembered’.

A few students in the grade 8 Art class used Pop Art as inspiration for painting and screen printing on their jackets!

On Monday August 23rd, we celebrated the outstanding efforts of a number of our grade 8 students over the first half of the year with a celebration morning tea. These morning teas recognise those students who consistently demonstrate excellent learning habits in the classroom. To receive a letter of commendation, students must receive predominantly ‘good’ and ‘excellent’ work habits on their mid-year reports. During this morning tea we also acknowledged those students achieving high academic results through our ‘Academic Excellence’ and ‘Academic Achievement’ certificates. We would like to congratulate all of these students on their fabulous efforts over the first half of the year.

Well done to all people involved in school footy, to make the grand final in both teams is a huge achievement and for our firsts to win the grand final was an awesome achievement for all involved.

Our Girls Footy team endured an inconsistent start to the season, only to reset and refocus in the second half of the roster. The improvement from our beginning players was evident during this time and the grade 10 students used the disappointment of last year’s Grand Final loss as a driving motivator to leave everything we had on the field for the remainder of the season.
The ‘team first’ approach and passion to win the flag led to a massive winning streak to end the season, highlighted by a thrilling seven point victory in the Grand Final. The girls have now won the right to represent the North of the state in the Hawks cup.
Premiers!!
It was a great season by the boys and we hope to continue the winning success next year. The Grand final was a hard fought game.
2-1 victory vs BHS
