In Grade 7 HaSS, students have worked through a Unit on Place and Liveability. They have developed their understanding of how to read a map, identify different countries and cities and the factors that make a place liveable. Students have started to identify different push and pull factors – reasons that draw people to live in a particular place (eg employment, security, nice weather) or push them away (high cost of living, pollution, crime). Students are now commencing a unit on Water and will look at the Water Cycle, the Nile River in Egypt and understanding the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources.
In Year 7 Science we have begun our Earth and Space Science unit by looking at sources of energy. We have focused on both renewable and non-renewable energy sources. Using STELR equipment students have been simulating wind energy production. This involves building a model wind turbine and experimenting with different numbers of blades, angle of these blades and comparing their design to commercial wind turbines.

Queechy Drama students are putting the final touches on scripts they have been rehearsing since last term. A letter will be sent home soon outlining the details…So watch this space!
A key element of our course is cooking food that would you find in a café. As in a café, we try to make sure that the things we make are consistent in size. This is really important for portion control and budget control within a café workplace. As young people who may be already working in the industry, or looking for a job, these skills are very important. So not only are the students getting to eat some very tasty food, they are learning skills they can apply outside of school. Two recipes that we have focused specifically on have been “Bread rolls” and “Kiss Biscuits”. How do you think they went?

On Tuesday 2nd August, Newstead College held a Career Expo and our Grade 10 students were given the opportunity to attend.
Over 30 businesses from around Launceston presented information about their industry and answered questions that the students had in relation to future career opportunities.
It was a fantastic experience for our students to not only visit the college but also interact with local businesses.
Feedback from the exhibitors was overwhelmingly positive, commenting on how impressed they were with the level of questions our students asked and how engaged they were.
