This term, under the theme of Sustainability, students are investigating infographic texts. Students are learning about essential elements of infographics. The final assessment task for the unit is for students to complete their own infographic with an adjoining context statement. Below is an infographic on the benefits of reading. We hope that students all dress up and get involved in the different Book Week activities next week!
Students in Year 10 HaSS are currently studying a unit of work on Human Wellbeing, with students spending time so far this term comparing different countries socio-economic indicators between continents and countries around the world. Students are exploring what makes a country developed vs developing, the key indicators as well as how we measure human beings across the globe.
To start term 3, year 9 maths classes have been studying Pythagoras and Trigonometry and how they can be used to solve for unknown lengths and angles of triangles. Students have been introduced to Pythagoras’ theorem as well as the three Trigonometric rations Sine, Cosine and Tangent.
Students have also investigated how these concepts can be applied to the real-world, with there being many applications in the engineering and design fields, as well as being able to estimate the height of trees.
Exciting update from Queechy High School's Digital Tech Department! Queechy High School is buzzing with digital excitement! Here's a quick peek into what our students are up to:
Grade 7: Algorithms & Computational Thinking. Our young minds are diving into the world of algorithms and computational thinking. They're honing their logical and problem-solving skills to conquer the tech realm!
Grade 8: AI Unleashed Artificial Intelligence is no longer a mystery for our Grade 8 students. They're exploring Teachable Machines and Google AI, getting hands-on with AI tech and its real-world applications!
Grade 9/10: Robot Warriors & Drone Explorers. From drones to robots, our Grade 9 and 10 students are in for an adventure. They're not just learning about it – they're flying drones, collecting data, and discovering the power of technology in action!
Stay tuned for more tech updates from Queechy High School. The future is digital, and our students are leading the way!

This week is Science week!

Year Eight MDT report
Term three and four will see the year eight students undertake the task of constructing metal G clamps. This practical project aims to enhance the students' understanding of basic engineering principles and develop their hands-on skills in metalwork. The project spans across several weeks and encompasses various stages, from initial design and material selection to the final construction of functional G clamps.

Design Phase:
During the initial stages, students are introduced to the concept of G clamps and their applications. They are guided through the design process, which includes viewing an existing design and incorporating their own ideas, specifying dimensions, and considering the necessary materials. Therefore, this phase encourages creativity and critical thinking as students learned to translate their concepts into feasible designs.
Material Selection:
Understanding the significance of material properties, students are educated about different types of metals commonly used in tool construction. They explore factors such as durability and strength to make informed decisions about the materials they will use for their G clamps. This experience deepens their understanding of material science and its real-world applications.
Metalworking Skills:
The practical aspect of the project involves teaching students’ fundamental metalwork skills. Under supervision, they learn to measure, cut, shape, drill and work on the metal lathe and manipulate metal pieces according to their designs. This hands-on experience allows them to familiarise themselves with tools like the oxy acetylene torch for brazing and other welding equipment. Students will use additional shaping tools with the metal lathe to make a spindle and, of course, safety protocols are consistently emphasised throughout this phase.

Throughout the project, students will encounter various challenges such as alignment issues, structural stability, and aesthetic considerations. So far, they have faced challenges and shown fantastic problem solving and critical thinking skills. Under the guidance of their peers and educators, students are learning to identify issues, brainstorm solutions, and implement improvements. This alteration process fosters resilience and adaptability in their approach to engineering tasks.
In conclusion, the construction of metal G clamps by year eight students is proving to be an engaging and educational project. It offers them insights into the world of engineering, material science, and practical metalworking. Through the various stages of design, material selection, construction, and testing, students will be gaining hands-on experience and develop important skills that extend beyond the realm of this specific project. This endeavour not only enhances their technical knowledge, but also nurtures their creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, preparing them for future challenges in the field of engineering and beyond within the 21st century.

What’s on at the Q
Community Partnerships
We have had a big fortnight focussing on careers and transition at Queechy.
We have great local partners in The Smith Family and The Beacon Foundation who have been working with many of our students in years 8, 9 and 10.
Watch the newsletter for specific updates about the ongoing work that they are engaged in with our students!
A big thank you to Darren Crawford, Dan Ritchie, Linda House and multiple teaching staff who have been supporting these invaluable “incursions” into Queechy this term.
Our community connections are thriving and the organisations that we partner with add great value and strength to the learning programs here at Queechy and as a school we thank them immensely.
Science Week
Our student scientists have had a wow of a week led by Sam Ayre and the science crew. We have had guest scientists in to speak about their careers in science, amazing science demonstrations at lunch time, tree planting and many in-class activities to highlight the importance of science to our world and student learning.
Well done to all involved!
The Heathers
We sent a crew of students and staff off to Newstead College on Thursday to attend the latest production. Rave reviews from those who attended. Congratulations to the students and staff at Newstead College for another high-quality production, well done!
On Wednesday, 9th August, a group of Queechy students were lucky enough to be invited to see Circus Quirkus which was held at the Door of Hope. The performance was amazing and the students had a great time. There were magical illusions, hoop tricks, juggling and acrobatics to keep us all highly entertained. Thank you to the local businesses who supported the event by providing tickets for the staff and students.
